EVANSTON, Ill. -- Softball's Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) and men's golf's Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) have been named Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week, Northwestern announced Monday.
Canney, a junior, earned the honor after she tied the NCAA Division I record for strikeouts in a single game Sunday during the first game of a doubleheader at Minnesota. Canney reached the mark with a 28-strikeout performance in a complete-game victory in Northwestern's 4-3, 18-inning win over the Gophers. The performance gives her 249 K's on the season, jumping three-time All-American Lisa Ishikawa's 230-strikeout season of 1986 for fifth on Northwestern's single-season strikeouts list. The honor is the fifth Athlete of the Week award of the Canney's career.
Wilson, also a junior, garners the accolade after he led Northwestern with a career-best second-place finish at the Bruce Fossum/Spartan Invitational last weekend. He carded a 2-under 214 (70-68-76), which included a career-tying-best 68 in the second round. Wilson shared the tournament lead after the first 36 holes. He earned second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2005. The Athlete of the Week honor is the first of Wilson's career.
