EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has announced wrestling's Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and softball's Tammy Williams (El Dorado Springs, Mo./Osceola) have been tabbed Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Herbert, a sophomore All-American, earns the honor after he went 4-0 and tallied two pins to claim the 174-pound crown at the 2006 Big Ten Wrestling Championships. He pinned Purdue's Nick Corpe, then won decisions over Minnesota's eighth-seeded Gabriel Dretsch and Penn State's fourth-seeded James Yonushonis to advance to the finals. In the championship bout, Herbert--the nation's second-ranked wrestler at 174 lbs.--pinned Iowa's third-ranked Mark Perry at 4:02 to claim the title. The conference title is the first of Herbert's career, as he finished second last season. This is the fourth Hilton Garden Inn Athlete of the Week award of Herbert's career.
Williams was selected after she led Northwestern with a breakout weekend at the Worth Invitational, leading the 'Cats with a .643 batting average, a 1.143 slugging percentage, a .667 on-base percentage and a eight runs scored in four games. Williams hit her first collegiate home run against No. 3 Tennessee, a lead off job against two-time NFCA first-team All-American and SEC Pitcher of the Year Monica Abbott. She then led off Northwestern's game against No. 6 Stanford with a solo homer before finishing the weekend with a 3-for-3 performance against Texas Tech. The accolade is the first of Williams' career.
