EVANSTON, Ill. -- Softball's Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) and men's swimming & diving's Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) have been named Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week, Northwestern announced Monday.

Grevers garners the accolade after he defended his NCAA Championship in the 100 back Friday night, turning in a 45.93 in the finals to defeat Auburn's Doug Van Wie by .29 seconds. The junior swam a 22.24 first 50, and never trailed in the race. Grevers is the Wildcats' first two-time champion since Bill Heusner won the 1,500 free in 1948 and 1949. Grevers defeated Florida Olympian Ryan Lochte in 2005 with a school record 45.62 to earn his first 100 back NCAA title. Grevers finished the meet with seven All-America honors, bringing his career total to 21. This is the 10th Athlete of the Week award of Grevers' career.

Canney, a junior, earned the laurel as she had two of the biggest games of her career last week, throwing her second-career no-hitter and defeating the No. 1 team in the nation. On Thursday at Cal State Fullerton, Canney recorded her 500th-career strikeout during a 10-0, six-inning no-hitter against the Titans. She then became just the second pitcher in the nation this year to defeat No. 1 UCLA, throwing a three-hitter with six strikeouts in a 3-2 win. The honor is the fifth of Canney's career.
