'Cats Lose Game One to Santa Clara 4-1

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara followed a fourth inning solo home run with one run in the fifth and two more in the eighth to win Game One of Sunday's doubleheader 4-1 at Stephen Schott Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. With the loss, NU drops to 3-10 on the season.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, SC second baseman Eric Newton lined a solo home run over the centerfield fence.
Designated hitter Tony Vercelli (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) drove in the Wildcats' lone run in the top of the eighth inning. The freshman was 3-for-4 with a trio of singles.
In the top of the eighth inning, right fielder Antonio Mule (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) hit a one-out single to center. He advanced to second on Anthony Wycklendt's (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) single and scored on Vercelli's liner to right centerfield. P> Junior George Kontos (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) started on the mound for the Wildcats and took the loss. Kontos pitched seven and one-third innings with six strikeouts.
Junior lefty Dan Schwartz (New York, N.Y./Northern Valley Regional) entered the game win one out and an SC runner on first. The first hitter he faced lined a triple to the right field wall. The second batter he faced hit a sacrifice fly to right field, putting the Broncos ahead 4-1.
Following a pair of singles, head coach Paul Stevens called on senior Chris Davidson (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley) to end the Santa Clara rally. A bases-loaded fly ball to centerfield ended the inning.
