EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has named women's basketball's Ifeoma Okonkwo (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak) and wrestling's Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) as its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Okonkwo earns her second-consecutive Athlete of the Week honor after recording the 1,000th point of her career and chipping in a game-high 20 points Sunday afternoon in a 58-56 win over Wisconsin. Okonkwo scored the 1,000th point of her career on a layup--her 15th point of the game--at the 17:21 mark of the second half.
The senior also recorded six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Against Michigan State on Thursday she tallied 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, recorded four rebounds and two steals. Okonkwo now has 1,005 points on her career.
Fox went 2-0 this weekend to help Northwestern's wrestling team to wins over Ohio State and No. 3 Illinois. Against Ohio State, the eighth-ranked Fox earned a 3-2 decision over No. 20 Kirk Nail to secure NU's 31-6 win over the Buckeyes.
Against Illinois, Fox tallied a one-point win over the Illini's Matt Weight in overtime to pull out the upset for the 'Cats in the final match of the day. With the team score tied at 16-16, Fox recorded an escape with 10 seconds remaining in the second tiebreaker to tally a 2-1 win and propel the Wildcats past the Illini for the first time in 10 tries.
