EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conference office today announced the Academic All-Big Ten teams for the 2006 fall season, with a total of 54 Northwestern student-athletes earning the honor. The sports honored in the fall are cross country, field hockey, football, men's and women's soccer and volleyball.
The Wildcats had 16 football student-athletes honored, the most for NU since the award was created in 1954. Northwestern's previous high for football was 15 in 2001.
To earn Academic All-Big Ten recognition, an athlete must be in his/her second year at the institution, letter in his/her sport and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.
