EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has named Nick Hayes (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central) of wrestling and Sam Nemecek (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) of women's fencing as its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week. The honor is the first for both.
Hayes went 2-0 with a win over a top-15 opponent over the weekend. Hayes, wrestling at 174 lbs., topped Northern Illinois' Danny Burk in an 8-6 overtime decision on Friday. He trailed 4-2 in the second period, but an escape in the third sent the match into overtime. Hayes scored a takedown in the extra period to win.
The senior trailed 3-2 after two periods in Saturday's match against Eastern Illinois' 12th-ranked Kenny Robertson, but notched another third-period takedown to pull ahead for the 6-4 win. NU is 8-0, its best start under head coach Tim Cysewski.
Nemecek continued her impressive second season as a collegian, tying for third out of 99 entries in the foil division at this weekend's USFA North America Cup in Richmond, Va.
So far this year, Nemecek has won a gold medal at the Burton Open, placed 15th in the men's open division of the Remenyik Open, finished fifth at the Penn State Open and gone an impressive 18-0 when the Wildcats hosted the Northwestern Duals on Nov. 19.
