EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has named senior Gerardo Alvarez (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) of men's soccer and junior Sara Stutz (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) of women's basketball as its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Alvarez scored two goals, his first goals of the season, in a 3-0 shutout win over Cincinnati in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday afternoon in Evanston. Alvarez opened the scoring six minutes into the game with a header into the goal off a David Roth (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade College Prep) crossing shot. He added his second goal on a penalty kick in the second half to help NU advance to the second round of the NCAAs for the second time in three years.
Alvarez is third on NU's all-time list with 26 goals, second with 24 assists and second with 76 total points. This is Alvarez's third Athlete of the Week Honor.
Stutz averaged 19.0 ppg over two games to help the 'Cats to a 2-0 start-its best beginning in six years. The junior poured in a career high 26 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field in a 78-60 victory against Loyola (Ill.) Sunday. Stutz was 3-of-6 from three-point range against the Ramblers and also pulled down six rebounds in the victory. Against Valparaiso, Stutz contributed 12 points and grabbed four boards. This is the second Athlete of the Week honor of Stutz's career. She was last honored on Dec. 19, 2005.
