Two Wildcat Doubles Teams Advance at ITA Midwest Regional Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Two Wildcat tandems advanced to the second round of the ITA Midwest Championships Friday at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis. The pair of senior Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium LohbrÜgge) and junior Juan Gomez (Mexico City, Mexico), along with the fourth-seeded team of Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) and Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) won their first round matches.
Christian and Lock, coming off a second round appearance at the All-American Championships, defeated Minnesota's Osario/Wilkins, 8-5. They will next face Michigan's Mazlin/Peretz. Tempke and Gomez, playing doubles together for the first time, took down Ohio State's O'Connell/Ozanne, 8-6. They face the pair of Helgeson and King from Notre Dame in the second round.
The pair of Alexey Evstratenkov (Moscow, Russia/Moscow International Gymnasia) and Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) lost their first round match.
In singles action, Sanborn advanced to the third round of the qualifying draw Friday by defeating Ohio State's Mike O'Connell, 6-4, 6-4, but fell to Chuck Levaque from Eastern Illinois later in the day, 7-6(2), 6-0.
Four Wildcats will play their first round matches in the main singles draw Saturday. Evstratenkov, Christian, Tempke and Lock will all be in action.
"I was pleased with our performance today," head coach Paul Torricelli said. "Alex got his feet wet and we did a good job in doubles. It was good to see Tempke and Gomez get a win under their belt playing together for the first time. Lock and Christian looked very strong tonight and hopefully will pick up where they left off at the All-American."
