EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has named freshman Eamon O'Neill (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) from men's soccer and sophomore Jill Putnam (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) from field hockey as its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
O'Neill scored his second-career goal Wednesday in a 2-0 win over Loyola (Ill.). The Ramblers had held their previous four opponents scoreless, but O'Neill broke through in the 14th minute to give Northwestern the early lead and record just the second first-half goal for the Wildcats this season.
The win was Northwestern's fifth in a row over Loyola.
Putnam picked a good time to record her first scores of the 2006 season as the sophomore recorded two goals, including the match-winner, in the Wildcats' 3-2 overtime victory Saturday against Michigan State.
Putnam tallied the deciding score after the 'Cats were awarded a penalty corner with no time remaining in the first overtime. Northwestern is now 6-6 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
