Northwestern Finishes Second Day of Wildcat Invitational

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's women's tennis team finished its second day of the Wildcat Invitational by going 10-1 in singles competition, beating both Iowa and Florida State in singles play.

Northwestern began the day by facing Iowa in singles. While Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney) fell in No. 1 singles, the remaining Wildcats picked up wins for Northwestern.

Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) picked up a win at No. 2 singles, beating Iowa's Milica Veselinovic 6-4, 6-2.

At No. 3 singles, Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) beat the Hawkeyes' Hillary Mintz 6-2, 6-2.

Jamie Peisel (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Country Day) followed suit with a win at No. 4 singles, topping Iowa's Jacqueline Lee 6-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Senior Feriel Esseghir (Sarasota, Fla./UCLA) took her match at No. 5 singles, beating Iowa's Merel Beelen 6-4. 6-3.

Alexis Conill (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) wrapped the Wildcats' first session up with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Iowa's Krissy Dowlin at the No. 6 position.

The Wildcats took the momentum from their dominating performance with them into the second round of singles play. In the second round, Northwestern met Florida State.

Prousis got the nod at the No. 1 position, topping Florida State's Suzanna Mansour 6-1, 6-3.

Rose then went 2-0 on the day by defeating the Seminoles' Tapiwa Marobela 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.

At No. 3 singles, Peisel topped Anna Rynarzewska 6-1, 6-2, for her second win of the day.

Esseghir won her second match on the day by topping Alina Aihailescu 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5).

Finally, Nazlie Ghazal (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) beat Florida State's Whiteny Eber, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5), to give Northwestern the sweep over Florida State.

The Wildcats are set to continue in the Wildcat Invitational starting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21 as they play Penn State in singles action.
