EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has named men's swimming and diving's Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and women's tennis' Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney) Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) turned in his best performance of the season at the Dallas Morning News Swimming & Diving Classic. Facing off against the man he beat for the 100 back NCAA title in 2005, Grevers again defeated Florida Olympian Ryan Lochte with an `A' time of 47.16 in the event. Grevers followed that performance with an `A' time of 1:43.66 in the 200 back, breaking the meet and pool records. He also broke the meet and pool records in the 200 free with an `A' time of 1:36.13, also a school record. In his other individual event, Grevers won the 100 free with a `B' time of 43.68.
Grier had a successful weekend at the 2006 National Collegiate Tennis Championships, teaming with Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) to finish second in doubles in a field filled with ranked opponents. After cruising through the round of 16 and quarterfinals, Grier, alongside Prousis, beat teammates Alexis Conill (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) 8-3, to advance to the doubles finals. There, Grier and Prousis fell to USC's Lindsey Magnani and Lindsey Nelson. Grier also advanced to the singles semifinals.
