EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has named senior Brett Basanez (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) of football and junior Julie Purcell (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) of volleyball its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.

Basanez eclipsed the 7,000-yard mark for career passing yardage as he led the Wildcats to a 38-14 season-opening victory over Ohio. He is now just 177 yards shy of becoming NU's all-time passing yardage leader.

Basanez, who has 7,311 career yards, threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Wildcats scored 28 second-quarter points en route to their sixth-straight home victory. Basanez's 353 passing yards was his third-highest single-game total. He also had 366 yards of total offense, his fourth-best single-game total.

Purcell led NU to a second-place finish and a pair of wins against undefeated 2004 conference champions at the Four Points University Plaza Wildcat Classic in Tucson, Ariz.

She hit a match-best .579 on 9-of-17 hitting with no errors as the Wildcats defeated reigning Big South champion Winthrop Thursday. She then led NU with 13 kills Friday in a 3-0 win against 2004 ACC champion and No. 20-ranked Georgia Tech. Purcell earned all-tournament team honors at the Classic.
