WACO, Texas -- Northwestern bested Baylor, 2-1 on Sunday in its second game of the Big Ten-Big XII Conference Challenge. The Wildcats also downed Texas Tech 4-1 on Friday night. Northwestern (3-1) is off to its best start since 1998 when the 'Cats jumped out to a 3-0-1 record. NU went 16-5-1 that year, and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Wildcats grabbed an early lead as senior Julie Lipinski (Tinley Park, Ill./Marian Catholic) scored in the seventh minute to give Northwestern a 1-0 advantage. Off a corner kick, Baylor was unable to clear the ball as Kelly Sitkowski (Elk Grove Village, Ill./James B. Conant) took a shot on goal. Sitkowski's shot deflected off a Baylor defender and rebounded to Lipinski who was able to put the ball into the lower left-hand corner of the net.
Baylor tied the game just 20 minutes later as Tiffany Boshers broke free and was fouled in the penalty box, giving the Bears their first penalty kick of the season.
With the score tied at 1-1, freshman Jeanette Lorme (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) scored the winning goal -- her second of the season -- in the 57th minute.
"I thought we looked very good at times, and very shaky at times," said head coach Jenny Haigh. "We are really happy to come out with two wins on the road. We came in and beared down in the second half. Overall, it was a good team effort."
The Wildcats are next in action on Friday at Lakeside Field as they host Oakland at 1 p.m. in the home opener of the 2005 season.
