The Northwestern baseball team announced its 2006 baseball schedule today. The Wildcats have 56 regular-season games, including nonconference trips to Florida, Virginia, Kentucky and California.
Northwestern begins the season Feb. 10-12 in Tampa, Fla., with a three-game series at South Florida. Following a three-game series at Virginia Commonwealth (Richmond, Va.), the Wildcats visit the Bluegrass state on consecutive weekends. NU will take on Louisville (Feb. 25-27) in Louisville, Ky., and the University of Kentucky (March 3-5) in Lexington.
Abandoning recent spring trip destination Florida, NU will head west on a nine-day swing through California. Beginning March 18, NU will play seven games in nine days in three different California cities.
NU kicks off the west-coast swing with a three-game series at the University of Santa Clara. Loyola Marymount will then host NU for a single game on March 23. A final three-game series on the picturesque campus of Pepperdine rounds out the spring trip.
With the majority of the nonconference schedule complete, NU will open the Big Ten part of the schedule with a four-game series at Michigan on March 31-April 2. NU's three other Big Ten trips in 2006 consist of Illinois, Iowa and Purdue.
Playing 32 league games, half of which are at Rocky Miller Park in Evanston, NU opens the home schedule April 7, hosting Indiana. NU will also host Penn State, Minnesota and Michigan State. NU was 11-9 at home last season.
The 2006 Big Ten Tournament will be held at the regular-season champion's home field.
The Wildcats are currently practicing in their fall season and look forward to a successful spring schedule. Senior Pat McMahon (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel), who set NU's single-season hits record with 82 last season and was named first-team All-Big Ten, is back to lead the offense. He has plenty of help in NU's leading RBI-man (52) in 2005, senior Anthony Wycklendt (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet). Wycklendt is currently seventh on NU's career home run list with 22. He hit 10 round-trippers in 2005, good enough for third in the Big Ten.
