ATHENS, Ga. -- Northwestern freshman Audra Cohen (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) battled Baylor's Zuzana Zemenova in a thrilling three-set match, but came up on the short end of a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 decision Saturday afternoon at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Cohen, who concluded one of the winningest seasons in NCAA history, finishes 51-7 in her inaugural collegiate campaign. She was trying to become the first female from a northern school to win an NCAA singles championship.
Cohen won the final two games of the first set to take a 6-4 lead in the title match. In the second set, Cohen won the first game before Zemenova, also a freshman, won four straight games to take command of the set. In the third set, both players battled back-and-forth, and it appeared Cohen might win the match when she went ahead 5-4. Zemenova came back, however, and won the final three games to take the championship, the first for a player from Baylor.
More information will be posted on this match later.
