EVANSTON, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference announced the 2005 All-Big Ten baseball teams today. Junior Pat McMahon was Northwestern's lone recipient earning first-team All-Big Ten laurels as a designated hitter.
McMahon earns his first conference distinction after leading the Wildcats and finishing second in the conference with a .400 batting average.
After sitting out 2004 because of Tommy John surgery, McMahon exploded this season, setting the Northwestern single-season hit record with 82. The previous record of 81 was held by Tom Hildebrand (1985) and Jeremy Kurella (2000). McMahon went 2-for-4 in the season finale to set the record.
McMahon is the first Wildcat to hit .400 (82-for-205) since Mark Loretta did it in 1993. His average dipped below .400 just once in NU's final 30 games of the season.
McMahon, a junior, set career highs in every major statistical category this season. He was second on the team with six home runs, he drove in 33 runs and scored a team-high 44 runs. He finished in the top five in conference statistics with 82 hits, 18 doubles, a .576 slugging percentage and a .452 on-base percentage.
The Conference office also announced honorees from each of the league's 10 baseball squads for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Honorees for baseball are Illinois' Chris Robinson, Indiana's Ryan Parker, Iowa's Andy Lytle, Michigan's Matt Butler, Michigan State's Tim Day, Minnesota's David Hrncirik, Northwestern's Pat McMahon, Ohio State's Cody Caughenbaugh, Penn State's Clint Eury and Purdue's Mitch Hilligoss.
