EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern outscored Michigan State 8-1 in the final four innings to win game two 10-4 in Saturday afternoon's doubleheader. NU won game one 7-5 to sweep the twinbill. Caleb Fields went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in two runs to help the Wildcats improve to 26-27 overall, 14-17 in the Big Ten.

For the third straight game, Michigan State took an early lead. A leadoff walk went to third on two groundball outs and scored on a single.

Northwestern tied the game in the bottom of the second. Left fielder Anthony Wycklendt (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) hit a one-out double and scored on Caleb Fields' (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) two-out single.

MSU recaptured the lead in the top of the third inning when they scored two runs on three hits off Wildcat starter Andrew Smith (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood).

NU got one of the two runs back in the bottom half of the third inning. A two-out line shot single to left field off the bat of shortstop Jon Mikrut (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) plated the Wildcat run. First baseman Mark Ori (Niles, Ill./Maine South) scored on the hit. Ori tripled off the wall in right center field.

NU took advantage of a two-out Spartan error to score three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. First baseman Mark Ori (Niles, Ill./Maine South) drove in a run with an RBI single. A run scored on an error and a wild pitch as well. Ori's RBI single put the `Cats ahead 4-3. Aaron Newman (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) scored on a wild pitch to give the Wildcats a 5-3 lead after four complete innings.

MSU got one run back in the top of the fifth inning. A one-out double came around to score on the Spartans second hit of the inning.

Sophomore Dan Schwartz (New York, N.Y./Northern Valley Regional) relieved Smith to start the sixth inning. In his second appearance of the doubleheader, Schwartz pitched the final two innings for his second save of the season. He gave up only one hit.

Schwartz earned the win in game one of the doubleheader and a save in game two.

NU blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning. Northwestern loaded the bases thanks to a Spartan error, a base-on-balls and a hit batsman. The first two runs of the inning scored when pinch-hitter Julian Romero (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque) lined a single to left field. Third baseman Mike Phelps (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township), who reached base via the walk, scored the third and final run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Northwestern and Michigan State wrap up the four-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. Northwestern will honor the senior class at the conclusion of the contest.
