EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has named graduate student Valerie Vladea (Tiffin, Iowa/Burlington Central) of women's tennis and senior Jon Mikrut (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) of baseball as its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Vladea was the only Wildcat to record three singles and three doubles wins over a weekend that saw Northwestern win its seventh-straight Big Ten Championship tournament. All of her singles wins came in straight sets, as she yielded an average of only two games per set to her opponents.
In the title match against Michigan, she won running away 6-0, 6-1. The three doubles wins, alongside Feriel Esseghir, improved the duo's record to 9-0 on the season.
Mikrut led NU to three wins over Iowa in a crucial Big Ten weekend. He hit .563, going 9-for-16 with six RBI. He walked twice and was hit by a pitch. After a 1-for-4 game one, Mikrut went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI in NU's 8-4 game two win. In game three's exciting 7-6 win, Mikrut drove in three and hit his second home run of the season.
He did all he could in NU's game four 6-5 loss, going 3-for-5 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI triple. He slugged 1.000 and had an on-base percentage of .632 for the series.
In midweek action, Mikrut was 5-for-7 with four runs scored and four RBIs in an 18-6 win over UW-Milwaukee. He had three singles, a double and a triple in the game.
