EVANSTON, Ill. - In a classic pitcher's duel Sunday afternoon, Ohio State beat Northwestern 1-0 in nine innings. The Wildcats managed only two hits as a second-inning run held up for the visiting Buckeyes. With the win, OSU won the series three games to one. The Wildcats fall to 23-26 overall, 11-17 in the Big Ten.
The lone run of the game came with one out in the second inning as a one-out single down the left field line plated an OSU runner from second. The runner reached base on a fielder's choice bunt, but moved to second during a run-down between second and third base. The next Buckeye batter singled in the eventual game winner.
A Mark Ori (Niles, Ill./Maine South) single in the first inning and a Jon Mikrut (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) single in the seventh were the only two Wildcat hits in the game. OSU hurlers Trent Luyster and Rory Meister shut down the Wildcat offense, which struck out seven times.
Sophomore Ryan Myers (Lake Villa, Ill./Lake Villa) started his ninth game of the year for NU. He pitched six complete innings, allowed six hits and the one run. Classmate Andrew Smith (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) threw the final three innings and allowed only one hit. Myers drops to 3-5 with the loss.
Northwestern is next in action when they host Illinois State at Rocky Miller Park Tuesday afternoon. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
