EVANSTON, Ill. - George Kontos pitched his third complete game of the season as Northwestern defeated Ohio State 9-6 in game one of a Saturday doubleheader at Rocky Miller Park. Jon Mikrut and Anthony Wycklendt each hit home runs as the Wildcats improve to 23-24 overall, 11-15 in the Big Ten.
Shortstop Jon Mikrut (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) put Northwestern on top1-0 in the bottom of the first inning with his fifth home run of the season. Mikrut hit the first pitch he saw for his fifth round-tripper of the season.
Ohio State tied the game 1-1 in the top of the second, taking advantage of a Wildcat error. With a runner on second, a two-out groundball to Mark Ori (Niles, Ill./Maine South) at first base was flipped to pitcher, George Kontos, (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) who was covering first. The ball glanced off Kontos' glove and the two-base error allowed the runner on second to score.
The Buckeye hitters touched Kontos for four runs in the top of the third. OSU had five hits in the inning, one of which was an RBI triple.
The Wildcats responded with eight runs in the bottom half of the third inning to take a 9-5 lead. The first seven Wildcats to step to the plate scored. Five of those hitters got hits, the big drive coming on Anthony Wycklendt's (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) three-run home run to straightaway center field. It was Wycklend't 10th homer of the season. Wycklendt is the first Wildcat to hit double-digit home runs in a single season since Joe Hieptas hit 11 in 1999.
In the third inning, five different Wildcats recorded RBI. NU"s eight runs is the most Ohio State has given up in a single inning this season.
OSU catcher Eric Fryer hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth to make the score 9-6 in favor of NU.
That's where the score would stay, as NU ended the Buckeye nine-game win streak.
