EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern pounded out 21 hits in a 14-2 Tuesday afternoon win over Illinois-Chicago at Rocky Miller Park, and improved to 22-23 on the season. Jon Mikrut went 3-for-5 with five RBI in the win. The `Cats are next in action when they host Ohio State this weekend. Game one of the four-game series will begin at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Northwestern grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Jon Mikrut (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) launched his fourth home run of the season over the left field wall. Centerfielder Aaron Newman (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and designated hitter Pat McMahon (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel) scored on Mikrut's homer. Newman led off the inning with a double, followed by a McMahon single. McMahon extended his hitting streak to 12 games with his first-inning single.

NU extended their lead to 5-0, plating two runs on two hits and a wild pitch. Left fielder Anthony Wycklendt (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) led off the inning, hitting his 11th double down the left field line. Wycklendt moved to third on Antonio Mule's (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) single through the left side. Wycklendt crossed the plate on an Illinois-Chicago wild pitch. Mule went to second on the wild pitch and moved to third when catcher Geoff Dietz (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) grounded out. Third baseman Mike Phelps (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) lofted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Mule from third.

NU plated six runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth inning, sending 11 Wildcats to the plate. Five different NU hitters tallied an RBI in the inning, giving the Wildcats an 11-0 lead after four complete innings.

UIC finally got to Wildcat starter Julio Siberio (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) in the top of the sixth inning, scoring one run on two hits. A two-out single to center plated the Flames first run of the game.

Sophomore Dan Schwartz (New York, N.Y./Northern Valley Regional) started on the mound in the seventh for the Wildcats, giving up one unearned run on one hit and a walk. A fielding error allowed the run to score.

The Wildcats got a run back in the bottom of the seventh on Stanley Finch's (Lubbock, Texas/Cooper) RBI-single to right field. Finch plated Wycklendt who had reached via base-on-balls.

The Wildcats plated two more runs in the eighth inning, and finsihed the game 14-2 victors.

Siberio picked up the win, which improved his reocrd to 2-0 on the season.

In the eighth, freshman Rob Campbell (Bloomfield, Mich./Andover) knocked home his first collegiate RBI with a sharp single up the middle, scoring Phelps. Phelps singled in his at bat and finished the game 3-for-4. Mikrut hit his 13th double of the season, and knocked in his fifth run of the game.
