'Cats Lose Game One to Penn State, 4-2

EVANSTON, Ill. - Penn State scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning and held on for a 4-2 win over Northwestern in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Rocky Miller Park. The Wildcats, who were held to just five hits, fell to 13-10 overall, 4-2 in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions improved to 15-10, 3-3.
PSU got the scoring started in the first inning as a leadoff double came around to score on a one-out single.
Freshman Aaron Newman (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and Mark Ori (Niles, Ill./Maine South) each tallied RBI groundouts in the third, giving NU a 2-1 lead. Mike Phelps (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) and Jake Owens (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) scored on the RBI outs.
The Nittany Lions recaptured the lead in the top of the fourth, chasing Wildcat starter Ryan Myers (Lake Villa, Ill./Carmel). PSU scored two runs on four hits.
Sophomore Dan Schwartz (New York, N.Y./Northern Valley Regional) relieved Myers with one out in the fourth inning, quickly issuing two fly ball outs to end the inning. Schwartz pitched three and two-third innings, giving up one run, striking out two.
PSU added an insurance run in the sixth, scoring a single run on two hits.
