WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Northwestern coach Chris Regenberg was hoping the Wildcats' success in their last tournament would carry over, and after the first 36 holes of Purdue's Lady Boilermaker Invitational, her wishes have come true.
Led by senior Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake), No. 44 Northwestern leads the tourney field by a stroke over TCU. The host Boilermakers are five shots back.
Northwestern shot a tourney-best 292 in the opening round to take an early seven-stroke lead. The Wildcats fell back to the pack with a 305 in the second round.
Kim, who earned second-place honors at the Mountain View Collegiate, fired rounds of 69 and 75 for an even-par 144. Sophomore Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) is in sixth place with a 3-over 147 (73-74).
Freshmen Katie Trachok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) are sitting 21st and 32nd, respectively, with a 9-over 153 (75-78) and an 11-over 155 (75-80). Sophomores Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and Kelly Robb (Concord, Mass./Middlesex School) round out NU's contingent with Scholten in 44th place and Robb in 49th.
Five teams in the 14-team Lady Boilermaker are ranked ahead of NU in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index.
The final round is scheduled for 8 a.m. CT Sunday.
