EVANSTON, Ill. - Caleb Fields drove home the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Northwestern swept Saturday's doubleheader, winning the second game, 7-6. Fields drove in three runs and Anthony Wycklendt robbed Iowa of a potential home run.
The Wildcats improved to 21-17 overall, 10-9 in the Big Ten.
Starting pitcher Chris Davidson (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley) cruised through the first two innings before running into trouble in the top of the third. Each of the first six Hawkeyes reached base via base-on-balls or hit. With four runs already in and runners on first and third, Jesse Brownell launched what appeared to be a three-run home run over the left field fence.
Junior left fielder Anthony Wycklendt (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) had other ideas.
Wycklendt raced back to the wall, timed his jump perfectly and used the fence to propel his body well above the top of the wall to make an unbelievable catch. Wycklendt's rob of Brownell's round-tripper ended the inning.
The Wildcats got two runs back in the bottom of the third. Shortstop Jon Mikrut (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) laced a two-out RBI single up the middle for NU's first run. A bases loaded walk to Wycklendt plated the other.
Northwestern took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs on three hits. After Geoff Dietz (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) was hit by a pitch, third baseman Mike Phelps (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) bounced a double over the left field wall, leaving runners on second and third with one out. Second baseman Caleb Fields (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) lined a triple to the right field wall, plating both runners and tying the game at 4-4. After a strikeout, Mikrut crushed a 3-0 fastball over the center field fence for his second home run of the season. Mikrut's long ball put NU ahead 6-4.
Davidson started the fifth, but a leadoff triple prompted head coach Paul Stevens to make a pitching change. Stevens called on left-hander Dan Schwartz (New York, N.Y./Northern Valley Regional). The next three hitters all flew out, the first scoring Iowa's fifth run on a sacrifice fly.
Iowa tied the game in the top of the sixth, as a one out single moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to left.
In the bottom of the sixth, Fields found a hole through the left side of the infield, scoring pinch runner Stanley Finch (Lubbock, Texas/Cooper) from second. Dietz was issued a leadoff walk before Finch took over base running duties. Finch went to second when Phelps perfectly executed a sacrifice bunt, setting up Fields.
Fields and Mikrut each ended the game with two hits and three RBI. Phelps was 2-for-2 at the plate with a sacrifice.
NU and Iowa finish off their four-game series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
