Box Score

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern scored six runs in the first two innings and went on to win game one of Saturday's doubleheader 8-4. Sophomore George Kontos pitched his second complete game in as many starts, improving to 4-3 on the season. Anthony Wycklendt and Max Mann each hit home runs in the win. NU improves to 20-17 overall, 9-9 in the Big Ten.

Northwestern came out swinging, scoring four runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman Max Mann (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) continued to swing a hot bat, crushing his fourth home run over the left field wall. Mann's two-run round-tripper followed and RBI single by Pat McMahon (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel) and an RBI groundout by Anthony Wycklendt (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet). Aaron Newman (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and Jon Mikrut (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) who singled to leadoff the game both came around to score.

After a 1-2-3 inning by Wildcat starter George Kontos (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) in the second inning, the Wildcat offense picked up right where they left off.

In the second, NU plated two runs when Mikrut tattooed his eighth double of the season down the left field line. Newman and Caleb Fields (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) scored on the hit. Fields doubled in his at bat.

Kontos retired the first 11 Hawkeyes he faced dominating on the mound the first time through the order. Kontos became his own worst enemy in the fourth, walking the bases loaded with two outs. A fielder's choice plated Iowa's run.

The Hawkeyes plated two more runs in the sixth, as a leadoff bunt broke up Kontos' no-hit bid. Three hits later, including a ground-rule double, NU led 8-3.

Iowa scored another run in the seventh, using an infield groundout to score the run. Kontos hit the first batter of the inning who moved to third on a double.
