EVANSTON, Ill. -- Fifth-ranked Northwestern, the top seed in this year's Big Ten Championship, shut down Penn State 4-0 in a Big Ten quarterfinal match in East Lansing, Mich., on Friday. The Wildcats collected their fifth sweep in the last seven matches, and improved to 22-2 overall. With the victory, NU now has won 19 consecutive matches in Big Ten Tournament play.
The top-seeded 'Cats started the bout in familiar fashion, notching the doubles point -- something they have done against every league foe this season. Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney), Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Valerie Vladea (Tiffin, Iowa/Burlington Central) all won in straight sets to give the Wildcats the three individual points, which coupled with the doubles point, notched the team victory. The other three matches were abandoned.
The Wildcats, looking to capture their seventh-consecutive Big Ten championship, play fifth-seeded Wisconsin at 11 a.m. (CDT) Saturday.
