EVANSTON, Ill. - Jon Mikrut and Pat McMahon combined to go 10-for-13 from the plate, propelling Northwestern to an 18-6 victory over Wisconsin-Milwaukee Tuesday afternoon in Evanston. The Wildcats racked up 24 hits improving to 18-17 on the season.
Starter Andrew Smith (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) pitched six complete innings, giving up one run on four hits for the win. Smith struck out three and walked none, improving to 2-4 on the season.
NU plated the first run of the game in the third inning, on Max Mann's (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) RBI fielder's choice. After the Panther hurler loaded the bases on three-straight walks, Mann hit a slow grounder to short, scoring Pat McMahon (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel).
The Panthers tied the game in the top of the fifth inning on a solo home run.
That's when the offensive floodgates opened for NU.
Over the next four innings, the Wildcats scored 17 runs on 21 hits, which included batting around the order in two separate innings. McMahon and Mikrut each ended the game, reaching base via the hit five straight times. Centerfielder Aaron Newman (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) ended the game 4-for-6, singling in his final four at-bats. Newman drove in a career-high four runs.
NU used five pitchers in the game, with Mikrut and Stanley Finch (Lubbock, Texas/Cooper) each stepping to the mound for the first time in 2005.
NU's 24 hits are the second most hits in a single game this season. They recorded 29 hits in a 30-2 win over Mount St. Mary's back on Feb. 26.
Eight of NU's nine starters had hits in the game, with six of them having multiple hits in the game.
NU hit three doubles and one triple in the game. UWM hit one double and two home runs.
NU is back in action this weekend at Rocky Miller Park, hosting the University of Iowa in a four-game conference series. Game one is set for 3 p.m. Friday afternoon. Iowa is currently third in the Big Ten with an 11-5 record. They have won 14 of their last 19 games.
