Box Score

MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and held on for a 3-2 win over Northwestern in game two of Saturday's doubleheader. Geoff Dietz drove in both of NU's runs, with a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly. George Kontos took the loss, despite giving up only four hits in six complete innings of work. The loss drops the Wildcats to 17-16 overall, 7-8 in the Big Ten.

Like they have done in each game of the series, NU took an early lead in the top of the second inning. Left fielder Anthony Wycklendt (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) continued to swing a hot stick, hitting a triple to the right field wall. Wycklendt led off the inning and scored when catcher Geoff Dietz (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) executed a perfect one-out sacrifice bunt.

Minnesota came right back, plating two runs in the bottom of the third. The Gophers were helped by a throwing error. Two singles were sandwiched around the error.

Dietz struck again, this time hitting a sacrifice fly to centerfield, tying the game at 2-2. Designated hitter Pat McMahon (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel) scored on Dietz's sac fly, reaching base on an error. McMahon moved to third on a Stanley Finch (Lubbock, Texas/Cooper) single.

The Gophers recaptured the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Jake Elder took a George Kontos (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) over the left field wall.

Kontos gave up just four hits in the complete game loss. He is 3-3 on the season.

McMahon snapped a 17-game hitting streak, going 0-for-3. During the streak, McMahon hit .446 with nine double and two home runs. He drove in nine runs and had 10 multi-hit games.

Wycklendt and center fielder Aaron Newman (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) were the only Wildcats with multiple hits in game two. Both players had two hits.

Northwestern and Minnesota wrap up the four-game series tomorrow with a single nine-inning game. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
