Box Score

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue scored three runs in the fourth and four more in the seventh, defeating Northwestern 10-5 earning the series spilt. Anthony Wycklendt went 3-for-4 with his team-leading sixth home run, driving in three. The loss drops NU to 16-14 overall, 6-6 in the Big Ten.

Northwestern jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Left fielder Anthony Wycklendt (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) launched a two-RBI double to the left centerfield gap, scoring Jon Mikrut (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) and Pat McMahon (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel). Mikrut drew a two-out walk and went to third when McMahon lined a double down the right field line.

Purdue came right back, tying the game with two runs of its own. Like NU, a pair of doubles scored the first run. A bases-loaded fielders choice scored the other run.

Purdue went ahead 3-2 in the second inning as a leadoff single scored on Mitch Hilligoss's second double of the game.

NU didn't stay down long, tying the game at 3-3 in the third inning. Center fielder Aaron Newman (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) led off the inning with an infield single. He quickly stole second and went to third on an error. Mikrut found a hole through the left side of the infield, bringing in Newman.

Wycklendt put NU ahead in the fourth inning, tattooing his sixth home run over the right centerfield wall. His tape measure shot was his third RBI of the game.

Starting pitcher Ryan Myers (Lake Villa, Ill./Carmel), who had been living dangerously all day, gave up a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The two-run shot put the Boilers ahead 5-4. Head coach Paul Stevens called on senior Chris Davidson (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley) from the bullpen.

Purdue put another run across in the fourth, this one unearned. After striking out what would have been the second out of the inning, an errant throw allowed the runner to reach base and advance to second. The runner moved to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball. After four complete innings Purdue led 6-4.

Davidson retired eight in a row in his longest outing of the season, but got into trouble in the bottom of the seventh. Purdue broke the game open in the inning, scoring four runs on four hits and taking advantage of a Wildcat error. After seven complete innings, the Boilermakers led 10-4.

Purdue reliever Jay Buente entered the game in with one out in the fourth inning and shut down the Wildcats. He gave up one run on four hits in five and two-third innings.

NU scored one run in the ninth when pinch-hitter Geoff Dietz (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) lined a single to left field. Third baseman Mike Phelps (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) scored on Dietz's hit.
