Box Score

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Northwestern scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning and held on for a 4-3 win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Lambert Field. Senior Mike Phelps had a two-run double and Chris Hayes earned his fifth save of the season in the win.

In the top of the third inning, Northwestern scored four runs on four hits, taking advantage of a Purdue error that kept the inning alive. After Jake Owens (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) was cut down at the plate trying to score for the second out of the inning, catcher Pat McMahon (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel) executed a perfect hit-and-run, moving Jon Mikrut (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) to third.

The first run of the game crossed the plate when Anthony Wycklendt (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) groundball was misplayed. Senior Mike Phelps (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) took advantage of the opportunity, driving a double to the right center field gap, scoring Mikrut and Wycklendt. First baseman Mark Ori (Niles, Ill./Maine South) lined a single to center field, scoring Phelps from second and giving NU a 4-0 lead.

Purdue got a run back in the bottom of the fourth when designated hitter Mike Coles launched a solo home run to left field. After four complete innings, NU led 4-1.

Purdue got another run back in the fourth inning, as reliever Dan Schwartz (New York, N.Y./Northern Valley Regional) walked in a run. Schwartz relieved starter George Kontos (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) after just one out in the first inning because of minor back strain. Schwartz shut down the Boilers through three innings before falling in trouble in the fourth.

Senior Chris Hayes (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) relieved Schwartz in the fourth, inducing a ground ball to end the inning.

Hayes gave up an unearned run in the fifth, making the score 4-3 in favor of Northwestern. A leadoff single, stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw. A groundball to Owens at second base scored the run.

Purdue made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners on first and second with one out. An error and single allowed the runners to reach base. But, like he's done all season, Hayes buckled down and got the next Boiler hitter to hit into the game-ending double play.

Owens ended the game 2-for-3 and Ori had an RBI.
