EVANSTON, Ill. - Following the arm of Penn State hurler Alan Stidfole, the Nittany Lions defeated Northwestern 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park. The Wildcats had four hits in the game, falling to 13-12 overall, 4-4 in the Big Ten. Penn State, which won three-of-four games over the weekend, improved to 17-10, 5-3.
Wildcat starter Evan Blesoff (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) fell behind 1-0 after the first inning, giving up a two-out single with a Lion runner on second base.
PSU added an unearned run in the third, taking advantage of an errant throw to first base. After recording the first two outs of the inning, Blesoff fielded a hard ground ball and made an unbalanced throw to first base. Following a hit batsman, Matt Cavagnaro slapped a single through the right side of the infield, scoring the runner who advanced to second on the overthrow.
The Nittany Lions added an insurance run in the sixth when a hustling Jim Leitgeb scored from second base on a wild pitch.
Lion pitcher Alan Stidfole had NU's number today. The junior left-hander pitched his second complete-game shutout in as many appearances and upped his scoreless innings streak to 30 innings. He struck out 13 and walked one.
Blesoff pitched a career high eight innings, giving up all three runs, two of which were earned. Blesoff is 2-4 on the season.
Senior Chris Davidson (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley) pitched the ninth, giving up a single.
Catcher Pat McMahon (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel) extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a double in the second inning.
The Wildcats are next in action when they host Robert Morris (Ill.) at Rocky Miller Park Tuesday afternoon. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
