EVANSTON, Ill. - Junior Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) and sophomore Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) have been named Northwestern's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Delguyd scored a takedown in overtime of his title bout against Ohio State's J.D. Bergman Sunday afternoon to become Northwestern's first Big Ten Champion since 2000. Ranked as the third seed, Delguyd upset the second seed in the semifinals before upending the top-seeded Bergman in the championship. With a 3-0 mark at the Championships, Delguyd improved his team-leading record to 28-6.
Canney pitched two complete game victories Saturday at the Worth Invitational, with her most impressive effort coming in a 6-1 win over No. 3 Stanford. She held the Cardinal to just three hits while allowing only one unearned run against a squad that had won 14 straight games and came into the contest batting .350 as a team. The Cardinal are the highest-ranked team Northwestern has beaten in the Kate Drohan-era. Earlier in the day, Canney fired a four-hit shutout in a 7-0 win over Nevada. The reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year is now 8-2 on the season.
