EVANSTON, Ill. - By claiming four of six singles matches, the No. 24 California Golden Bears pulled off a stunning, 4-2 upset of No. 2 Northwestern Wednesday afternoon in Berkeley, Calif. The loss is only the Wildcats' second of the season, dropping them to 11-2 overall.
Singles competition was all the two clubs could fit in, as heavy rains washed out the doubles matches.
Straight-set victories from junior Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney) and sophomore Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) provided the 'Cats with two points, but losses at No. 1 and the bottom half of the lineup cost Northwestern the match.
With their wins, Grier and Prousis have each won their last four matches. Grier has won those four in straight sets and now holds Northwestern's best dual mark at 11-2. She is 24-6 overall.
The 'Cats return to Evanston this weekend to reopen Big Ten play against Michigan and Michigan State Saturday and Sunday, March 26 and 27. Both matches begin at 11 a.m.
