BRYAN, Texas -- Led by sophomore Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), Northwestern finished the 12th Annual Texas A&M "Mo"morial Invitational on a strong note and placed fifth in the 15-team tournament. The Wildcats, ranked 46th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index, were in 11th place after the first 18 holes.
The final-round surge pushed the 'Cats ahead of numerous Central Region foes, including 30th-ranked Baylor, who finished a stroke back of Northwestern.
Scholten carded the best individual round of the final day -- a 2-over 74 at the challenging Traditions Golf Club. TCU's D'Rae Ward, who finished third overall, also shot a 2-over 74 on Tuesday. Scholten, who was at even-par heading into her final two holes, finished 21st overall with a 24-over 240 (84-82-74). She started the third round in 52nd place.
Senior Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) and sophomore Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) placed a respective 19th and 21st overall. Ina Kim shot a 23-over 239 (81-74-84), while Alice Kim equaled Scholten's 54-hole score of 240 (80-79-81).
Kelly Robb (Concord, Mass./Middlesex School) and Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) rounded out the Wildcat lineup with respective finishes of 38th and 69th. Freshman Katie Trachok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) competed as an individual and finished 70th.
No. 26 SMU overcame a nine-stroke deficit to edge the host Aggies and No. 33 Kent State by a single stroke. TCU, ranked 32nd, finished in fourth place. Illinois State's Samantha Richdale shot a 10-over 82 on Tuesday, but held on to win the individual title by a stroke.
