Box Score

BRADENTON, Fla. - Freshman center fielder Aaron Newman (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) lined a leadoff single to center, moved to second on a passed ball and came around to score on first baseman Mark Ori's (Niles, Ill./Maine South) single to left. That's how NU started the scoring in Game Two of Saturday doubleheader in Bradenton, Fla. Things progressed from there, as NU won the game 7-1 over Northeastern, sweeping the doubleheader.

In the fifth inning, left fielder Anthony Wycklendt (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) gave NU a 2-0 lead, lining a single through the left side, plating Mikrut from second. Mikrut reached on a fielding error by the Huskies second baseman and moved to second when designated hitter Antonio Mule (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) was walked.

Northeastern threatened in the fifth, putting runners on first and second with one out. Wildcat starter George Kontos (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) buckled down, inducing a groundball double play to end the inning.

Kontos threw a masterful game, pitching seven complete innings, striking out eight. The right-hander gave up only two hits. In 14.2 innings pitched this season, Kontos has given up just seven hits and two runs.

The Wildcats broke it open in the sixth, scoring three runs, to take a 5-0 lead. NU took advantage of a two-base throwing error by the Huskies third baseman. The errant throw allowed two runs to score. Ori followed the error with a line-drive single to right. Newman, who's bunt for a hit attempt caused the error, scored from third base.

NU extended their lead to 7-0 in the eighth as Owens scored on a passed ball and Ori drove in his third run of the game. Ori laced a two-out single to right centerfield, scoring Newman. It was Ori's fourth hit of the game.

Sophomore Dan Schwartz (New York, N.Y./Northern Valley Regional) relieved Kontos to start the eighth and went just one-third of an inning. Schwartz gave up one unearned run and loaded the bases before giving way to senior Chris Hayes (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest). Hayes did exactly what the he was brought into the game for. He threw two pitches, the second an inning ending double play.

Northwestern had 10 hits in the game, giving them a total of 39 on the day. The Wildcats had 29 hits in a 30-2 win over Mount St. Mary's (Md.) earlier in the day.

With the doubleheader sweep, NU improves to 3-3 on the season.

The `Cats are scheduled to begin a doubleheader against Maine and Seton Hall at 10:30 a.m. (EST), Sunday morning.
