MINNEAPOLIS -- Northwestern continues to add its championship haul, winning four more events on Friday night at the Big Ten Championships, which are being held at Minnesota's University Aquatic Center.
Sophomore Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), last year's Co-Big Ten Swimmer of the Year, won his fourth and fifth events of the Championships. He helped the Wildcats win their third relay event -- the 200-yard medley -- with an NCAA qualifying time of 1:26.49. Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial), Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) and Ben Dexter (Issaquah, Wash./Issaquah) also competed in the relay. The Wildcats' time in the event is unofficially the nation's second-fastest.
After setting a Big Ten record earlier in the day in the 100 butterfly, Bubolz outdid himself in the final, posting another record time -- 46.46 -- and edging out Michigan's Davis Tarwater as he did in the prelims. For Bubolz, it was his fourth Big Ten championship and his first individual title.
Alexandrov won the 100 breaststroke -- his fourth title of the Championships -- after posting the top time in the prelims. He swam an NCAA-A time of 53.33.
Grevers successfully defended his Big Ten title in the 100 backstroke, winning this year's event with a time of 45.92 seconds -- unofficially the nation's second-fastest time. It was Grevers' second individual title of the Championships.
As a team, the 14th-ranked Wildcats remain in third place, 45 points ahead of fifth-ranked Michigan. Minnesota and Indiana are battling for first place, with the host Gophers holding a narrow one-point lead (469-468) over Indiana.
