ARLINGTON, Texas - The Northwestern baseball team found the scoring column early, but couldn't muster anything after the first inning, falling to Kansas State 4-1 at Clay Gould Ballpark in Arlington, Texas. NU went 0-3 in the UTA Invitational, falling to 1-3 on the season.
After struggling from the plate against Arkansas State yesterday, NU wasted no time in finding the hit column Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats slapped two singles to right field, taking a 1-0 advantage. Freshman Jake Owens (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) lined a one-out single to right, moved to second on a fielding error, and came around to score on Antonio Mule's (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) single through the right side.
K-State threatened in the bottom of the first, but starting pitcher Andrew Smith (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) got a bases-loaded double-play ball to end the inning. Two hits and a hit batsman loaded the bases.
Kansas State tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second, touching Smith for a double and two singles to start the inning. Following the third hit of the inning, catcher Pat McMahon (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) threw out two would-be base stealers to end the inning. A fly out to right was sandwiched between the two caught stealing.
The Wildcats from Manhattan threatened again in the bottom of the fifth, this time scoring two runs on three hits and a walk. A bases loaded single plated the two runs.
Sophomore Dan Schwartz (New York, N.Y./Northern Valley Regional) relieved Smith with runners on first and second and no outs in the fifth. A bunt for a hit loaded the bases, setting up the two-run single, giving KSU a 3-1 lead.
K-State added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as a leadoff double came around to score. Sophomore Ryan Myers (Lake Villa, Ill./Carmel) relieved Schwartz after an RBI double, and sent K-State down in order.
Myers pitched two and two-third innings, giving up only one hit to finish the game. It was his first appearance on the mound this season. He struck out three and walked none in the process.
NU is next in action when they travel to Bradenton, Fla., to compete in the IMG Baseball Academy Tournament. The Wildcats schedule in Bradenton will be released early next week.
