ARLINGTON, Texas - Arkansas State left-hander Taylor Fowler pitched the game of his career Saturday afternoon, no-hitting the Northwestern baseball team on Day 2 of the UTA Invitational. With the loss, NU falls to 0-2 in the tournament (1-2 overall) and will face Kansas State in its third and final game, tomorrow, at 11:30 a.m.
Fowler dominated throughout the game. He struck out nine and did not allow a Wildcat runner past first base after the third inning. He faced just four over the minimum, inducing a double-play ball to end the game. He did walk four in the contest.
Wildcat starter, sophomore George Kontos, (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) pitched a solid game for his first outing of the season. The Niles West product pitched seven and two-third innings, striking out four and walking three. After giving up a solo home run in the sixth and a single run in the seventh, Kontos gave way to senior Chris Hayes (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) with two outs in the top of the eighth. Hayes got a soft ground ball back to the mound to end the inning.
Arkansas State added two unearned runs in the top of the ninth, as a pair of Wildcat errors allowed a walk and single to score.
NU's biggest threat came in the first inning when freshman Jake Owens (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) and junior Mark Ori (Niles, Ill./Maine South) were both walked. NU attempted a double steal, but as Owens moved to third, Ori was chased back to first and tagged out. Owens was left stranded on third as a groundout ended the inning. NU would not get a runner past first base for the rest of the game.
