ARLINGTON, Texas - Playing their first game at the UTA Invitational in Arlington, Texas, the Northwestern baseball team fell to Texas-Arlington 11-3 Friday afternoon. UTA jumped out early 2-0 in the first inning and put the game away in the fourth, scoring five runs. NU scored single runs in the second, third and seventh innings, but errors and timely Maverick hitting was too much to overcome.

In the first, a leadoff walk, a stolen base and a Northwestern error allowed the first UTA run to score. A two-out double scored the second run of the inning.

NU responded with a run in the top of the second as freshman Max Mann (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) delivered a two-out RBI double to the wall down the left field line. Sophomore Antonio Mule (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) came around to score after reaching on a single through the left side and moving to second on catcher Pat McMahon's (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel) single to right. A strikeout ended the inning, leaving McMahon and Mann in scoring position.

In the third, junior Mark Ori (Niles, Ill./Maine South) tied the game at 2-2 with a sharp single to center, scoring Caleb Fields (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) from second. Fields lined a double down the left field line to reach base. Senior Jon Mikrut (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) followed with a single to left, but the runners were left stranded as the Maverick hurler induced a fly out and strikeout to end the inning.

That's when the wheels fell off for NU.

With the score tied 2-2; UTA plated five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Two Wildcat errors and four Maverick hits allowed Texas-Arlington to put the game away. The big blow came when a one-out two-run triple followed a throwing error allowing three runs to score. Another single plated the runner from third.

The Mavericks did not stop there. They scored two runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth, giving them the 11-3 win.

NU did manage a run in the top of the seventh. Mann got things going with his second hit of the game, lining a single to right field. Mann was the only Wildcat with multiple hits.

In the seventh, a Maverick error allowed freshman Jake Owens (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) to reach base, moving Mann to second. Freshman Mark Bennett (Palos Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) hit into a fielder's choice, putting runners on first and third with one out. Freshman Aaron Newman (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) beat out a double play ball, hustling to first base, allowing Mann to advance home.

NU used five pitchers in the game. Senior Evan Blesoff (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) made his second start of the season, pitching the first five innings.

NU is back in action tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. (CST), taking on Arkansas State at Clay Gould Ballpark. Arkansas State beat Kansas State 6-5 on Day 1 of the UTA Invitational.
