EVANSTON, Ill. - Fifth-ranked Northwestern swept the doubles matches and claimed four of six singles contests to beat 36th-ranked Wisconsin 5-2 Sunday in both teams' conference openers.
Northwestern improves to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Wisconsin falls to an even 3-3 on the season and is 0-1 in the Big Ten.
Valerie Vladea (Tiffin, Iowa/Burlington Central) was one of four Wildcats to post victories in both singles and doubles on the day. In doubles, she teamed with senior Andrea Yung (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) for the first time this season and duo won at the No. 3 position. At No. 4 singles, Vladea defeated Kaylan Caiati 6-4, 6-4.
Freshman Audra Cohen (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas), junior Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney) and sophomore Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) all recorded two wins on the day, as well.
Cohen and Grier -- the nation's top-ranked doubles duo -- defeated 27th-ranked Martin and McGaffigan at No. 1. The two also won their singles matches, both improving to a team-best 7-2.
Prousis and senior Kristi Roemer (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) continued to roll at the No. 2 doubles position by earning their team-leading sixth win.
Northwestern is next in action at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 19th against North Carolina in the Combe Tennis Center.
