EVANSTON, Ill. -- Freshman Julie Bielawski (Rogers, Ark./Rogers) scored a career-high 13 points, but it was not enough as St. John's defeated Northwestern, 95-53 in the title game of the 22nd Annual Mildred and Roger L. White Invitational on Saturday at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Wildcats are now 3-3 on the season, while St. John's remains undefeated at 7-0.
It seemed like a matter of the ball bouncing the wrong way for the Wildcats, and everything falling for St. John's. When asked about the tough luck, head coach Beth Combs said:
"It seemed just like that. I was disappointed that things went the way they did, but it is about effort and we need to put ourselves in a position where we can overcome that. I thought we were able to step up at the end and I thought it was pretty good to be 3-3 heading into finals week."
Northwestern jumped out to an early 9-2 lead to open the game, fueled by five points from A.J. Glasauer (Freiburg, Germany/Theodor-Heuss Gymnasium). St. John's battled back to take the advantage midway through the first half - a lead that they held through halftime, 38-24, and would retain for the rest of the game.
The Wildcats forced eight first-half turnovers, but the Red Storm turned it up on the offensive side, shoot 45 percent (17-of-37) from the field.
St. John's finished the game shooting 52.9 percent from the field (37-of-70).
Ifeoma Okonkwo (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak) scored nine points and recorded eight rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament team. Sophomore Nadia Bibbs (Chicago, Ill./Hillcrest/Boston University) also chipped in nine points.
