EVANSTON, Ill. -- Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) has been named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week the conference announced Wednesday. The accolade is Herbert's second-career conference wrestler of the week award.
Herbert received the honor after he kept his perfect season alive this past week, going 6-0 as the nation's second-ranked grappler at 174 lbs. The sophomore began the week by pinning Indianapolis' Mike Jackson -- the second-ranked 174-pound wrestler in NCAA Division II -- in 35 seconds, good for second all-time on NU's fastest falls list at 174 lbs.
Herbert had another successful day at the Reno Tournament of Champions, where he went 5-0 en route to the 174-pound title. Herbert recorded three falls, a technical fall and a decision in the tournament, including a pin of Oklahoma State's 16th-ranked Brandon Mason at 2:05 to take home the crown.
Herbert now has won 17-straight matches dating back to March 17, 2005. His career record of 58-3 (.951) has him on pace to shatter NU's career-winning percentage record.
Herbert is the second Wildcat to garner conference wrestler of the week accolades this season-- Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edward) earned the honor for the week of November 16, 2005.
