Northwestern outfielder Anthony Wycklendt (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) preseason All-America team. Wycklendt, a senior, was tabbed a third-team selection in the NCBWA's seventh annual preseason Division I All-America release.
Wycklendt is one of only three Big Ten student-athletes to garner the preseason award. Purdue shortstop Mitch Hilligoss was tabbed a second-team selection, while Michigan catcher Jeff Kunkel earned third-team honors.
As a junior, Wycklendt earned second-team All-Mideast Region honors starting all 54 games for the Wildcats. He led NU and was third in the Big Ten with 10 home runs. Wycklendt is the first Wildcat to crack the double-digit home-run mark since former Wildcat standout Joe Hietpas did it in 1999. He ended the 2004-05 season with a team high--seventh in the Big Ten--with 52 RBI, the most by a Wildcat since Hietpas had 50 in 2000.
To compliment his hitting prowess, Wycklendt did not make a single error in the field. Starting 53 games in left field, Wycklendt recorded 70 put-outs and seven assists. His 54th start was as the designated hitter.
The Northwestern baseball team opens the 2005-06 season with a three-game series at South Florida on Feb. 10. Game time is set for 6 p.m. (CT).
