Northwestern Names Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has named seniors Tim McGarigle (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick) of football and Christie Gardner (West Bend, Wis./West Bend East) of volleyball its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their record-setting performances last week.
McGarigle became Northwestern's all-time leader in tackles (511) with a 13-tackle performance in the Wildcats' 28-27 win over Iowa. It was the 27th double-digit tackle effort of McGarigle's career.
He also was defending on Iowa wide receiver Herb Grigsby who dropped a fourth-down pass with five seconds left, which secured the win for Northwestern. With the win, the Wildcats became bowl-eligible and remained alive in the Big Ten title chase.
In her first match after becoming Northwestern's career dig leader, Gardner recorded an NU single-match record 36 digs in the Wildcats' 3-2, come-from-behind win over No. 15 Purdue Friday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The match marked the first time since 1993 that the 'Cats have come back to win a match from an 0-2 deficit.
Gardner followed that effort with 17 digs Saturday night in a 3-1 win over Illinois, helping the Wildcats to a .324 hitting percentage with her passing.
