EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's Vedran Vukusic (Split, Croatia/Medical) and Ifeoma Okonkwo (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak) have been named Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Vukusic earned the honor in consecutive weeks after he averaged 24.5 points in two games as the Wildcats went 1-1 last week. He shot 64.3 percent (18-of-28) from the field with four three-pointers and added five rebounds, four assists and two steals. In the win over Florida Atlantic on Monday night, Vukusic scored a game-high 27 points on 9-of-12 (75 percent) from the field and 8-of-11 from the charity stripe. He also added four rebounds and two assists. Then on Saturday, Vukusic eclipsed the 20-point mark for the fifth time in as many games this season with 22 in the close loss to DePaul.
Okonkwo garnered the accolade after she recorded two double-doubles, including a career-high 31 points in two road games at Missouri and at Illinois-Chicago. Against the Tigers, Okonkwo tallied two team highs--16 points and 11 rebounds--in an 87-64 loss. On Saturday against UIC, the senior dumped in a career-best 31 points and bettered Tuesday's rebound total with a game-high 12 caroms. Okonkwo shot a scorching 12-of-14 from the field and recorded 10 points in the final six minutes to secure the win. She now has five career double-doubles, including two in the first three games of this season.
