EVANSTON, Ill. -- Nationally ranked Northwestern travels to East Lansing, Mich. this weekend to open its season at the Michigan State Open, Nov. 12-13. Northwestern enters the 2005-06 season ranked No. 18 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

The MSU Open has attracted nearly 400 wrestlers from as many as 30 teams in recent years. No team scores are kept for the open, but medals are handed out to the top eight placewinners in each weight class. Twelve mats will be used for the first two sessions of the tournament.

Last season, sophomore Dustin Fox Galion, Ohio/Galion High School) began his collegiate career with a second-place finish in the heavyweight division of the Michigan State Open. Fox --- seeded sixth in his weight class -- won his first three matches before falling in the title round to Bill Stouffer of Central Michigan, 4-2.

Other Wildcats enjoyed success as well.

Former Wildcat Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop Martin McNamara) turned in a third-place finish on the weekend. Kimberlin won his first three matches before falling in a tight quarterfinal bout, 6-4. He rallied in the consolation bracket though, eventually beating Keegan Mueller of Ohio State 5-2 to finish third.

Sophomore Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) placed fourth in his first collegiate tournament, going 5-2 overall.

Seniors Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) and Dan Quintela (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) both posted fifth-place finishes at the open. At 197 lbs., Delguyd was upset in the third round, but won three matches in the consolation bracket to place fifth. Quintela posted a 5-3 mark on the weekend at 133 lbs.
