EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's Christie Gardner (West Bend, Wis./West Bend East) and Will Briley (Longview, Texas/Longview) have been named the Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Gardner set a career high with 32 digs in Northwestern's five-game win at Illinois. The total was the fourth-best in school history. She followed that up with a 21-dig performance Sunday at Purdue, setting a season-high for a three-game match. With her efforts, Gardner moves into fourth-place all-time at Northwestern in digs with 1,295.
Briley started the second and third matches of his career last week, recording shutouts in both. Briley notched two saves against Illinois-Chicago and five against conference foe Michigan State. Perhaps his biggest save of the week came on a penalty shot by Michigan State's Ryan McMahen. McMahen tried to go to the lower left corner, but Briley dove to make the save, got back up and saved the rebound to keep the shutout intact.
