EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's Cassie McLaughlin (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) and Brett Basanez (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) have been named Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
McLaughlin, a junior transfer, led Northwestern to a .316 team attack percentage in Saturday night's win over Indiana by hitting a career-best .619, with a season-high 15 kills in the match. The former ACC Freshman of the Year at Florida State was a perfect 8-for-8 in the second game of the match, en route to besting her old mark of .615 set as a Seminole against Wake Forest. The win snapped a four-match skid for Northwestern.
Basanez followed up his outstanding performance against Wisconsin (430 yards of total offense) with another impressive effort in the Wildcats' 34-29 victory at Purdue this past Saturday. Basanez completed 37-of-55 passes for 463 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 43 rushing yards, as well as a rushing TD, to push his total offense figure to 506 yards-the eighth--best single-game mark in Big Ten history. For his performance, Basanez earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors for a second straight Monday.
