EVANSTON, Ill. - Freshman Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edwards) and senior Brielle Bovee (Winter Park, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) have been named Northwestern's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Lang recorded his team-leading sixth pin of the year in Northwestern's victory against Purdue Saturday. The pin came at the 50-second mark, helping the 'Cats to their first Big Ten win in nearly five years. Lang -- ranked 16th in the nation at 141 lbs. -- is tied for second on the team for most wins with 20. The freshman also recorded a major decision victory in Northwestern's 22-14 loss to No. 19 Indiana Friday night. Lang is a perfect 9-0 in dual matches this year -- a mark matched only by fellow freshman Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny). This is the second time Lang has received the honor this season.
Bovee set three career records in winning all four of her events during the weekend in NU's two dual-meet victories. Friday against Illinois, she won both the 100 breast and 200 breast events with career-best times of 1:03.66 and 2:16.51. She then re-established her career time in the 100 a day later with a 1:03.62 in the Wildcats' upset win over No. 8 Michigan. The honor is the first of the season for Bovee.
